Photobiomodulation Therapy (PBM) using safe and non-invasive LEDs is able to penetrate through the skull and reach the brain producing a positive effect on circulation in the area where the LEDs are applied. Light therapy reaches many mitochondria in the neurons and the endothelium (blood vessel lining) which respond to the photons by releasing of nitric oxide which is often called the "miracle molecule". The resulting natural vasodilation increases blood flow reaching areas of the brain in need of oxygen and nutrients and inflammation levels also decrease. Nitric oxide is a signaling molecule, which also upregulates the manufacture of various healing substances including beneficial enzymes in the area where it is applied to the body. The production of ATP (adenosine triphospate) by the cells in response to photobiomodulation therapy will greatly increase cellular energy supporting natural healing processes. LED light therapy has been shown in research studies to stimulate positive change in the body with Traumatic Brain Injury, Concussion, Stroke, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Depression, Stress and Anxiety.

Watch the video below to hear leading researcher Margaret Naeser describe benefits of light therapy observed in clinical research studies that she has conducted at Boston University on You Tube.

One therapy system can be used for many purposes to support healing and wellness anywhere on the body including for pain relief, circulation support, skin healing and athletic pre and post workout conditioning.

Light Therapy and TBI

In the past centuries and decades, brain damage was thought to be irreversible. In addition, it was taught in medical schools that the brain was not able to form new brain cells. Current science now validates that neither of these bleak outlooks are true. Multiple studies have shown that near infrared LED light is capable of penetrating the human skull and can assist the body's own process of healing. Angiogenesis and neurogenesis are carried out by the body to heal itself. This natural healing process is supported by photobiomodulation, diet, exercise and other modalities.

About TBI Evaluation and Brain Scans

Traumatic brain injury is common and the loss of consciousness or direct impactto the skull is not required to sustain a TBI. CT and/or MRI structural images do not tell the whole story or eliminate that a TBI has been sustained. Brain SPECT imaging is a superior scan for the evaluation of TBI.

Stimulate the release of adenosine triphosphate (ATP):

ATP is the major carrier of energy to all cells. Increases in ATP allow cells to accept nutrients faster and get rid of waste products faster by increasing the energy level in the cell. All food turns into ATP before the cells utilize it. ATP provides the chemical energy that drives the chemical reaction of the cell.

Combined Light Therapy with Good Diet and Lifestyle for Enhanced Results

Much research has been done on helping the brain heal. Light therapy provides a powerful boost to circulation and accelerates cellular processes that are part of the body's natural healing process and is a cornerstone of a brain support program. We recommend that clinical programs combined nutritional, dietary, exercise and healthy lifestyle components to a brain healing regimen that can aid the speed and quality of recovery.

We advise you to discuss any supplementation, diet and exercise programs with your qualified medical health practitioner prior to implementation.

Top lifestyle recommendations to support brain health and repair include:

  • Exercise: studies support positive changes from exercise that include circulation benefits, enhanced neurogenesis and angiogenesis. More than one brain researcher encourages exercise as a top recommendation.
  • Nutritional Supplements: many experts point to omega fats, probiotics, B vitamins and other essential macro and micro nutrients to support brain health and recovery. Additional nutrients and herbs have been identified for potential to support cognitive health, decrease inflammation or offer cellular protection including but not limited to Alpha Lipoic Acid, N-acetyl Cysteine, PQQ, and herbs such as bacopa and ginko biloba that are worthy of investigation.
  • Special Supportive Diets: Ketogenic and other supportive diets may offer nutrients for optimal brain support.
  • Meditation, stress management: learn how to meditate, listen to classical music.
  • Spend time outdoors in nature and soak up sun with exposed skin while connecting with life.
  • Learning new and using information and skills: learn an instrument, a language, a new sport, dance or physical activity, writing or journaling.

Actions of LED Light Therapy that May Support Brain Health

Increase circulation:

Circulation is increased by increasing the formation of new capillaries, which are additional blood vessels that replace damaged ones. New capillaries speed up the healing process by carrying more oxygen as well as more nutrients needed for healing, and they can also carry more waste products away.

Stimulate acetylcholine release:

Acetylcholine functions in the brain as a neurotransmitter, causes cardiac inhibition, vasodilation, gastrointestinal peristalsis and other parasympathetic effects.

Reduce the excitability of nervous tissue:

The photons of light enter the body as negative ions. This calls upon the body to send positive ions, like calcium among others, to go to the area being treated. These ions assist in firing the nerves, thereby relieving pain.

Increase phagocytosis:

The process of scavenging for an ingesting dead or degenerated cells by phagocyte cells for the purpose of clean up. This is an important part of the infection fighting process. Destruction of the infection and clean up must occur before the healing process can take place.

Opportunities abound for the clinical use of LED Light Therapy. Symptomatic pain associated with neuropathy; chronic pain; arthritis; plantar fasciitis; back, neck, and joint pain; and many other conditions respond quickly to LED Light Therapy. With as little as 20 minutes of therapy, your patient could have a pain and medication-free day and improved quality of life.

Our light therapy systems use wavelengths of light energy that dramatically increase circulation to injury sites and areas of chronic pain. The light is delivered to the site through LED pads placed directly on the skin. The result is a rapid relief of discomfort, improvement in sensation, and regeneration of damaged tissue.

Light Therapy doesn’t just numb the pain. The release of Nitric Oxide increases circulation getting oxygen to the nerves and stimulating the body’s natural healing mechanisms.

LED Light Therapy has been shown to:

  • Increase circulation by increasing the formation of new capillaries, which speed up the healing process.
  • Stimulate the production of collagen, the most common protein found in the body and essential for repairing damaged tissue.
  • Stimulate the release of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), a major carrier of energy to all cells.
  • Reduce swelling by increasing lymphatic system activity.
  • Stimulate healing of wounds and inflammation by increasing circulation in the tissues and connective tissues.

Neurocare Systems can also be used to relieve pain associated with chronic pain conditions such as low back pain; neck pain; arthritis; bruises; burns; wrist pain (carpal tunnel); leg pain; sprains; tennis elbow; and tight muscles.

Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Concussion, Stroke & PTSD

Studies at Harvard have shown that low-level LED Light Therapy has the unique ability to improve brain circulation in hard-to-reach areas of the brain. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): When normal brain circulation is restored, symptoms of PTSD are often lessened. Many of our red and near infrared therapy pads can be used for therapy on the head and brain. A bonus is that the same pads can be used for pain relief and circulation support anywhere on the body.

Neuropathy

Peripheral Neuropathy is a nervous system disorder that shows up as numbness, tingling, stinging, sensitivity and pain in the hands and feet. Neuropathy has many causes but poor circulation is a common factor. LED Light Therapy can increase blood flow to tissues promoting the body's ability to heal damaged nerves and often relieving symptoms of Peripheral Neuropathy caused by poor circulation. Our convertible Boot 122 pad is frequently used for relief of the symptomatic pain of neuropathy.

Arthritis Pain

Neurocare Systems are FDA-cleared to increase circulation and reduce pain associated with arthritis. Therapy helps reduce inflammation, stiffness and other symptoms associated with Arthritis. Infrared and red LED light therapy activates cellular activity to naturally reduce joint pain and swelling. Many of our red and near infrared pads can be effectively used for arthritis pain.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Neurocare Systems are FDA cleared to reduce pain associated with Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. This common nerve disorder causes numbness, weakness, and pain in the wrists and hands. Poor circulation can be a contributing factor in Carpal Tunnel and LED light therapy can increase local circulation in the wrist and hand helping to stimulate healing in nerve cells promoting pain relief

Leg Pain

Light Therapy can help relieve stiffness, tight muscles, soreness and joint inflammation in the knees, hips, ankles and feet. It is used for a range of painful acute and chronic conditions. Light therapy can often help address the cause of pain and help the body heal over time.

Back Pain

Most people experiences some form of Back Pain from time to time. Increased circulation from photobiomodulation can reduce pain and inflammation associated with back pain while stimulating the body’s own healing processes. Our large Body 264 pad is a good choice for back pain relief.

Neck Pain

LED Light Therapy treats neck pain by increasing circulation and reducing inflammation. Light Therapy helps relax tight muscles and stiffness and relieve soreness and pain in the neck.

Shoulder Pain

Shoulder Pain and tight upper back muscles are common from many activities including prolonged hours at a desk. Our large Body 264 pad can be wrapped over the shoulder to increase circulation to areas of inflammation and naturally reduce shoulder pain and aid mobility.

Burns

Low-level Light Therapy can reduce pain and help prevent infections resulting from burns and other skin irritations. Light therapy may also reduce scarring during the healing process. Blue and infrared light are often used for skin and wound healing. Research studies have shown that blue light may have antibacterial properties. Red light also supports healing in all layers of the skin. Both wavelengths are also used in aesthetic applications because of their ability to help rejuvenate the skin.
